One very important aspect of traveling abroad is health and safety. It is important to realize that most U.S. insurance coverage is not recognized abroad. As a student studying abroad, you would normally have to pay for medical service and fill out a claim form to be returned to your home company for reimbursement. It is imperative for you to know the limits of your coverage and to carry at least one claim form to be signed by appropriate medical persons abroad to facilitate reimbursement.
Study abroad programs and travel can be physically and medically rigorous and the possibility of illness or an accident is always a concern. Therefore, the Texas State Study Abroad Office strongly advises that you have a physical examination to receive assurance from a physician that you are able to travel abroad.
All students participating in Texas State study abroad programs must show proof of health insurance with international coverage. When evaluating options, make sure that you have sufficient health and accident insurance for the entire period of your trip.
The following are insurance companies that provide health insurance to study abroad students. You are free to choose the insurance company of your preference (these are just options that are presented as a reference and it is not the intention of Texas State to suggest any of these companies):
